Background
Nearly 175,000 new cases of leprosy are reported annually by more than 120 countries across all 6 WHO Regions. In addition, zero report on leprosy was provided by 54 countries in 2022. Thus, a record 182 countries reported leprosy data to WHO for 2022. The NTD Roadmap 2021-2030 lists leprosy among the 3 diseases targeted for elimination (defined as interruption of transmission). The Global Leprosy Strategy 2021-2030 which is aligned to the Roadmap, articulates this goal of elimination of leprosy disease and a clear vision of zero leprosy in terms of zero disease, zero disability and zero stigma and discrimination. The new Leprosy Elimination Framework marks a paradigm change from control of leprosy to interruption of transmission and further towards elimination of leprosy disease through phases with clear epidemiological cut-offs and criteria.
The WHO Global Leprosy Programme is a unique global programme as it is headquartered in WHO South-East Asia Regional Office in New Delhi and headed by the Regional Director.
It is proposed to hire the services of a JPP, with the twin objective to support GLP in various initiatives as well as to attract young talent in the field of leprosy, develop technical and managerial expertise through exposure at global level.

The overall objective of the WHO-Program:
The main objective of the Global Leprosy Programme is to achieve interruption of transmission and elimination of leprosy disease in Member states, specifically the targets of zero new autochthonous case in 120 countries, 70% reduction in annual new case detection and 90% reduction in grade-2-disability and child new case detection rates, as per the Global Leprosy Strategy 2021-2030.
Terms of Reference
Under the overall guidance of Team Leader – Global Leprosy Programme and under direct supervision of Technical Officer/Medical Officer, the JPP will provide support in the following areas:
- Conduct desk reviews on leprosy situation and assessment of needs at country-level.
- Coordinate GLP meetings with stakeholders.
- Coordinate with other relevant units such as disability prevention and rehabilitation.
- Develop training materials (online courses) and identify key research areas.
- Draft meeting reports and training activities, develop communication materials, best practices and media advocacy materials.
- Other activities as assigned by the GLP Unit.
Education:
· Minimum
At least a university degree in Medical field (MBBS). Additional education is an asset.
· Desirable
Additional qualification in epidemiology, public health
Work Experience:
· Minimum
At least one year experience in the field of public health
· Desirable
Publications and presentation in the relevant areas
Age:
· Age below 35 years
Skills required for the assignment:
Minimum
· Ability to coordinate, plan and implement projects, conduct training activities
· Computer proficiency in Outlook, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
· Knowledge in developing course materials including content development
· Excellent spoken and written English.
Desirable
· Knowledge in understanding the regional situation including cultural and geopolitical situations.
