Dear Members of the Selection Committee,
I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in the Political Affairs Internship with the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA) at the United Nations in Geneva. With a strong academic background in international relations and a passionate commitment to disarmament and global peace initiatives, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your esteemed office.
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at New York University and am expected to graduate in May 2025. I am available for the internship from September 2024 through December 2024. My coursework and research have equipped me with a robust understanding of disarmament treaties and conventions, such as the Anti-Personnel Landmine Convention (APLC) and the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC). Additionally, my Peace and Security course provided me with hands-on experience in drafting policy briefs and conducting comprehensive research, aligning closely with the responsibilities outlined for this internship.
The opportunity to support the diverse activities of the ODA, from assisting in the drafting of official documents to attending and summarizing high-level conferences, deeply resonates with my career aspirations. My previous role as a research intern at the European Union honed my skills in data management, document preparation, and research. I excelled in summarizing complex meetings and drafting reports, which will be valuable for contributing effectively to the ODA’s mission. Collaboration and communication are integral to my approach, as evidenced by my active involvement in the Student Representative Council (SRC), a student-led organization, and the Political Affairs Students Academic Research Team. I take pride in working collaboratively with diverse teams, valuing different perspectives, and contributing towards a collective goal. My ability to adapt and prioritize tasks efficiently ensures that I meet deadlines while maintaining high-quality work.
I am proficient in standard software applications such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Additionally, I have experience with social media management and web presentation tools, which I am keen to leverage to enhance the visibility of disarmament issues, in line with the ODA’s objectives. I understand that interns may be required to undertake the internship remotely due to constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel, and access to UN premises. I am fully prepared to undertake the internship remotely, either partially or entirely, and am flexible with work hours based on the time difference and organizational requirements. Additionally, I acknowledge that the internship is unpaid, and I am prepared to cover all related expenses.
My interest in the United Nations Internship Programme stems from a deep commitment to advancing global peace and security. I am eager to contribute to the ODA’s mission by supporting disarmament initiatives and engaging with international stakeholders. The prospect of working in Geneva, contributing to disarmament-related conferences, and supporting the vital work of the ODA is incredibly motivating. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how my background and skills align with the goals of the ODA.
Thank you for considering my application. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your office and am available at your convenience for an interview.
Sincerely,
Mitchelle Owunabi
